CFD Modeling for peak pressure assessment on buildings

We are looking for a passionate student to contribute to our research in the field of Computational Wind Engineering. The selected candidate will work on exploring the feasibility of assessing the peak pressures experienced by buildings utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. This research aims to explore the performance and costs associated to high-fidelity simulations for this relevant assessment under different wind conditions and with different numerical settings.

Key Responsibilities:

•CFD Simulations: Perform Large Eddy Simulations to analyze the peak pressures arising on buildings due to wind action, comparing the results with wind tunnel tests. Work will be mainly carried out in our High-Performance Computing cluster.

•Modeling: Assess the impact of modeling choices on the results of the simulation, developing strategies to optimize the assessment in terms of industrial feasibility.

•Data Analysis: Work with large data sets and extract meaningful insights.

•Report Writing: Document methods and results obtained focusing in a clear and concise format.

•Collaboration: Work closely with a team of CFD experts and engineers to validate models.

Qualifications and skills:

•Education: Enrollment in the final year of a Master’s degree program in Engineering or related fields.

•Experience: Prior experience with CFD simulations is essential. Knowledge of Large Eddy Simulation methods is preferred. Experience with wind tunnel testing is a plus.

•Software Skills: Proficiency in CFD software (preferably OpenFOAM), and programming languages such as Python or MATLAB for data analysis. Proficiency in Linux environment preferred.

•Analytical Skills: Strong ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions from simulations and experiments.
